O.C. BBQ survived another lunch rush. I came up for air for the first time in two hours. Uncle Ken asked me questions about Mekhi. I didnât understand why but gave short and sweet answers.
Chris and Michele pitched some fresh ideas for next weekâs special. Uncle Eddie put his two cents in when Chris wanted to add baked potatoes to the menu. My uncle loved potatoes in any shape or form, but with his sauce and Uncle Kenâs brisket shredded on top, heâd been pushing for me to make it a regular. It sold well when we introduced it to our customers a few Saturdays ago. Many inquired about when weâd have that special again.
I dropped the ball with meeting their request because of Mekhi. The moment my personal interfered with my business, I realized I was more hurt than I admitted. Having to hold all of it in would be the death of me. Everyone bought that Mekhi and I were good minus minor hiccups. So, playing into it drained me. I hated lying.
Hell, Uncle Eddieâs sauce wouldnât have gotten done if Victor didnât take over. He worked with the manufacturing company in my place. I blamed exhaustion. Victor had no problem handling what I couldnât, but he also took on things Iâd always done myself. This had to end soon before I lost all steam.
I took notes of what ingredients weâd need to make the baked potatoes a regular item. Mainly the topping options and more potatoes.
Uncle Ken got a phone call and took it outside. Victor informed me heâd take his break.
My uncle returned to the kitchen with Mekhi following behind him.
I rolled my eyes. âWhat areââ
âAht! I told him to come,â Uncle Ken raised his hand in defense. âNow, baby girl, whatever is going on, the two of you need to get to the bottom of it.â
In my place of business?
Chris and Michele froze in place with their eyes on me. Uncle Eddie kept his head in his pot like he didnât even see what his brother did.
Mekhi inched closer. âNina, Iâm sorry. I had no other way to get through to you.â
Didnât he have a damn job? Or did he fuck someone else and quit again?
Mekhi tried his best to appear sheepish, like Iâm the monster he couldnât approach on his own. This was the last time heâd invite a family member in our marriage trying to paint lies. For someone who brought this trouble to our door, he was doing too much for me to keep his secret much longer. The last thing Iâd do was have my family think I caused our issues.
I chewed the inside of my cheek, trying my hardest to keep my composure. Mekhi tapped on that nerve that I avoided giving into. Especially around other people.
âWe can talk at home, Mekhi. Iâm working.â
âWhen are you ever home long enough to talk?â
Although everyoneâs eyes werenât on us, we were in the middle of them. I excused the both of us to talk in private.
